How to Achieve Better Performance Results By Developing Success Profiles

Organizations face significant challenges when seeking to hire the “right” candidate to fulfill a role and, once hired, developing a plan to help team members meet performance expectations and improve their impact for the organization.

Developing success profiles associated with each role within your organization provides:

  • a road map for successfully hiring team members.

  • a foundation for coaching and advancing team members.

  • a way to identify where and when training and development are needed.

  • clear, measurable expectations for job performance, evaluation, and planning for the future.

Use developing success profiles as an opportunity for a collaborative discussion to fine-tune and determine agreed upon success profiles for each team member. Begin development of a success profile utilizing the criteria identified in the job description. Include a list of the individual’s current competencies and those needed for the future.

The Success Profiles system needs to include five elements:

  • Ability- Identify whether the team member possesses the skills to perform the role.

  • Behavior- Identify if the person’s behaviors match what is needed to perform well in the role.

  • Experience- Identify if their previous experience matches what is needed in their role.

  • Strengths- Identify the important qualities that the person brings to the role.

  • Technical- Identify if their technical skills match the needs of the role.

The success profile document should be discussed at the time of hire, and revisited periodically to assess progress, changes, and new developments, including identifying when it is time to offer further leadership opportunities to team members.

Documenting the knowledge, skills, experience, and characteristics needed to successfully perform each role provides the organization with the ability to effectively hire talent, objectively evaluate performance, and develop leaders.
